The team's members are psyched when invitations to special training camps arrive for Kageyama and Tsukishima. But Hinata is left empty-handed.
Hinata manages to get into a training camp, but only as a ball boy. He tries to impress everyone with his enthusiasm but attracts some hurtful scorn.
The practice match begins and, thanks to his low status at the camp, Hinata gets a detailed and valuable view of what advanced volleyball looks like.
Tsukishima gives Hinata a chance to join blocking practice with the group. Kageyama has an encounter with a player who makes an impressive spike.
It's the last day of the camp and Hinata takes every opportunity to observe, ask questions and learn. Meanwhile, Kageyama tries something new.
The team is back together and prepares for their next practice match. When Kageyama critiques Hinata's jumping technique, Asahi notices a change.
The practice match is in full swing and the team's greater, if awkward, coordination draws praise. But Kageyama's high standards soon spark friction.
As the practice match draws to a close, Date Tech adapts to Hinata's quick attacks. Karasuno decides to have him adapt right back at them.
The new year brings luck to some and misfortune to others. The team heads to Tokyo and prepares for the first day of Nationals with some digital help.
After the opening ceremony for Nationals, Hinata notices his shoes are missing. As Shimizu helps him, she recalls fond memories with the team.
Hinata and Kageyama impress the crowd as Karasuno starts to hit its stride in the first match. Their opponents make a surprising substitution.
Hinata and Kageyama make an impression on the team's former captains. Fukurodani's Bokuto doesn't like playing in the smaller, colder sub-arena.
Coach Ukai preps the team on their next match with Inarizaki High, which took second place in last year's tournament and has an intimidating fan base.
Inarizaki starts strong thanks to its coordinated offense and zealous supporters, but Hinata won't let his opponents throw off his rhythm.
The Miya twins turn up the pressure with some quick attacks, but Kageyama's solid setting and Tsukishima's smart plays keep Karasuno in the game.
When Yamaguchi's ace gives Karasuno the lead in the first set, Inarizaki starts to focus on the one opponent who hasn't been playing well: Tanaka.
Though Nekoma and Sarukawa Tech both exhibit strong defense in their match, Nohebi's Daisho realizes that Sarukawa is deliberately holding back.
Although Sarukawa Tech's targeted attacks leave Kenma physically exhausted, he has a plan to lure his opposing defenders right where he wants them.
Atsumu's serves home in on Nishinoya, who keeps failing to receive them. Inarizaki's Rintaro Suna manipulates Karasuno's blockers with his wide range.
Inarizaki High substitutes team captain Kita into the game in a bid to get back on track. Karasuno High makes a substitution of its own in response.
After Tsukishima's blocking strategy starts to prove successful, Karasuno puts Kinoshita into the game but Inarizaki easily counters his serve.
Atsumu's setup helps put Inarizaki back on track. The Karasuno players panic and make mistakes as they struggle to get past the opposing blockers.
Though Kageyama and Tsukishima miss a quick attack, Azumane's powerful serves help get Karasuno back into sync. But Inarizaki isn't rattled for long.
As the teams fight for match point, Karasuno remains steady even as Atsumu scores a service ace. Kageyama and Hinata square up for his next serve.
The players from each team process the results of the match, as does everyone else that watched it unfold. Fukurodani advances to the next round.
