고조선 (2,333 B.C.? ~ 2C B.C.)

It’s estimated that Dangun founded Gojoseon

(meaning “old Joseon” as opposed to the Joseon Dynasty of later centuries) in 2,333 BC. during the prehistoric period.

단군이 고조선(이후 세기에 건국된 조선 왕조에 대비하여 "오래 전의 조선"이란 의미)을 건국한 것은

선사시대인 2,333 BC.으로 추산되고 있다.

Since no written records exist of Gojoseon, its myth and history must be reconstructed from ancient Chinese documents or archeological remains.

고조선에 대한 자체 문헌이 존재하지 않기 때문에,

그 신화와 역사에 대해서는 중국의 고문헌이나 고고학적 유물에 의존해 재구성될 수 밖에 없다.

The title of Dangun implies that he served both as the ruler and the priest.

단군이란 명칭은 그가 지배자이자 제사장으로서 두 역할 모두를 수행했음을 암시하고 있다.

The Gojoseon period can be further divided into Dangun Joseon, Gija Joseon, and Wiman Joseon,

which implies that the leadership passed on from Dangun to Gija and then to Wiman.

고조선 시대를 좀 더 세분하면 단군 조선, 기자 조선, 위만 조선으로 나눠 볼 수 있는데,

이는 지배권이 단군에서 기자를 거쳐 위만으로 점차 이행됐음을 암시한다.

This period came to a close when Gojoseon was defeated by the Han Dynasty of China in a war for regional hegemony in the 2nd century B.C.

기원전 2세기경 지역 패권을 두고 싸웠던 중국의 한나라에게 패배함으로써

고조선의 시대는 끝나게 된다.

These three kingdoms each grew out of different tribes, but they shared a common heritage as the descendants of Dangun.
